This is Why Cristiano Ronaldo Won’t Win The English premier League For Manchester United This Season- Paul Merson Column
If Cristiano Ronaldo wins the league at Man. United, it will be the biggest thing he’s ever done in football.
But he won’t because he is not the same player any more and if he can’t win the league for the club then I don’t see the point in signing him.
Harry Kane wins the league, with the money they have spent on Jadon Sancho and Ronaldo, surely you try and get Kane? I think he would have gone there. United are the biggest club in the world.

Signing Ronaldo is great for the fans because to them they believe that the king is back. But it’s frustrating. You sell shirts with Ronaldo, you win the league with Kane.
I said on Sky the other day that Ronaldo is half the player he was. United fans don’t like it. But that’s just a fact. He’s not going to beat three players with a stepover and bend it into the top corner any more.
Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the No.7 at Manchester United this season. There is no doubt about that but
Cristiano Ronaldo can never Be Who He Was Again.
The geezer was unplayable when he was at United before. He’s playable now. He’s 36!
It’s physically impossible to be the same player he was all those years ago, however well he looks after himself. I’ve never said he’s finished. He isn’t. He will score goals in the Premier League.

But these days he is the kind of player who doesn’t have a kick all game and then scores twice. United need more than that if they want to win the league. But I wonder if they really do want to win the league.
Is this about being successful or is it about making money off Ronaldo’s name?
Juventus bought Ronaldo to win them the Champions League. They never looked like winning it – and didn’t even win Serie A last season. People say oh he scored more goals than Romelu Lukaku. Yeah but who won the league?
Jadon Sancho also joined Manchester United over the summer.
Call me a pessimist but I don’t think United would even have tried to sign Ronaldo if Manchester City had not come in for him first. They just didn’t want him going to Man. City.
The kids at United should learn from him. If you can’t learn from a player like that, you’ve got a problem.
But they will also get less game time because of him, and is that good for their development? I’m just saying what I see. I love Ronaldo. When you say Ronaldo or Messi I say Ronaldo because he’s done it in every country he’s been to.
But let’s not pretend he’s going to come here and rip up the Premier League and win the title with United at his age. And if he’s not winning you the league? What’s the point?
Saul Niguez joined Chelsea on deadline day in a loan deal from Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea now have a midfield dreams are made of after getting Saul Niguez on deadline day.
What a phenomenal signing that is. He’s in his prime. He’s just won La Liga. He plays in all the big games. And you get him on loan. That’s amazing.
He’s only going to cost £30m if they make it permanent as well. Where do you ever find players like that for that kind of money? Amazing.
Chelsea already have three great midfielders in N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic. He’s the fourth.

And they are going to need him. They are going deep in every competition this season. They need players.
I don’t know why teams like Manchester United and Arsenal didn’t go in for him. Look at their midfields.
United have Paul Pogba but he can’t play in a two and then it’s Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.
And Arsenal ended up handing a new contract to Granit Xhaka… The difference in class is enormous.
Harry Winks should feature for England in the future, says Paul Merson

England will need to change the way they play at the next World Cup and that could open the door for players like Harry Winks.
I have no doubt they will qualify for Qatar, but once we’re there the conditions are going to mean we can’t play our normal game.
Because of the weather there it’s going to be hard to play high tempo Premier League football. We’re going to need to keep the ball.
And that means picking different players who are comfortable on the ball and don’t give it away.
Players like Jack Grealish should be perfect in Qatar. He sees a pass, wins free kicks, and you can’t take the ball off him.

But Gareth Southgate is going to have to find other players who can run the game and dictate play better in midfield.
Players like Winks and James Ward-Prowse might be too safe for some people but they are what you need
Someone like Winks is perfect because he’s efficient on the ball and looks after it – but he has to get back in the Tottenham team first!
