His family released a statement on Facebook saying: ‘General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19.
‘He was fully vaccinated. We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment.
‘We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.’
The four star general was the first black secretary of State.
He served under several Republican administrations – including for Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush.
Also, from 1991-1993 he served as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Bill Clinton after being appointed to the post by Bush Sr.
Tributes To Powell filled social media today.
“As a Black man simply attempting to sort out the world, Colin Powell was a motivation,” Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) composed. “He was from NYC, went to City College, and rose to the most elevated positions of our country. Sending affection, strength and petition to the loved ones of Secretary Powell. Rest in power sir.”
Protection Secretary Lloyd Austin said Powell “was an enormous close companion and coach to me, and there’s an opening in my heart right now as I contemplate his misfortune. My contemplations and supplications today are with his family, and I need them to realize I will miss him beyond a doubt.”
Giusti called Powell “a staggering man” who was making every moment count. “Each time I addressed him, he said, ‘I’m feeling stunning,'” she said. “It’s an update that when you have malignancy you must be on your game constantly.”
